Kind words about SLAM THE SQUARE…

The following comment was sent to the NUY’s email account regarding our concert/SLAM the Square event that took place on Sept. 19th:

“I had a great time, everything was good to experience. I especially liked walking out of Goodbye Blue Monday and hearing the music begin: A Neutral Milk Hotel song I’ve been listening to non-stop for about three days.”

Moral of this story: We make people happy and have good taste in music. Go us.

This is How they do it in Providence

Providence, capital of Rhode Island, has a population of 171,557, but surrounding metropolitan population of over a million and a half according to the Office of Management and Budget. Cities of this size rarely cater toward skateboarders in the downtown area. But Providence, near their Kennedy Plaza (smack dab in the middle of downtown) has this interesting structure: a winter ice rink and summer and fall skatepark. This could be a really cool idea for the Northfield ice rink if the skatepark doesn’t get off the ground in the near future. A good flat and smooth surface with the space to add jumps and accessories is all that is needed. This place was packed at 8:30pm in late October. Youth are very happy with the arrangement of the city and are extremely happy with the level of support they have received with this project.

Many parents and other adults were watching the skateboarders and a few bikers work their artform. I wish more downtowns would do things like this. How cool would a downtown rink/skatepark be? This park was not the only park in Providence but did provide some very cool variety.

Sept. key 012

The Northfield Union of Youth’s Youth Board was recently selected as a winner of The Minnesota Alliance With Youth’s Red Wagon Award. The award was given to youth groups and young individuals who have demonstrated increased academic achievement, civic engagement & service, and exemplary leadership. The selection committee consisted of the Alliance Leadership Team, Minnesota’s Youth Advisory Council members, key partners, and AmeriCorps Promise Fellows. Three youth from the current Youth Board recently attended the ceremony held at the Governor’s Residence in St. Paul. Presenting the awards this year was Lt. Governor for the State of Minnesota, Carol Molnau. Congratulations Youth Board!!! Thanks to our local rep David Bly for the photo.

Key and PRIMEtime partners receive $246,000 grant

  • Category : News , Northfield Schools

This was originally posted by Zach Pruitt on the Northfield Healthy Community Initiative website on September 9th and just now picked up by the Northfield Union of Youth media department.

The Minnesota Office of Justice Programs announced on Friday that Northfield has been selected as a recepient of funding from the “Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) – American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.” This federal stimulus funding will support the Northfield PRIMEtime out-of-school collaborative, which provides free after school and summer programming to over 1,300 local youth (unduplicated) in grades K-12 each year. The Northfield Public Schools served as the official applicant for the collaborative. Northfield will receive $246,039 total over a two-year period.

The funding will provide staffing support for four important youth programs, as well as transportation costs to get local youth to/from these programs:

* Northfield Union of Youth/The Key

* Middle School Youth Center

* PLUS after school program at Bridgewater, Greenvale Park, and Sibley Elementary Schools

* Summer PLUS program

A total of 315 applicants statewide applied for this funding. Northfield PRIMEtime was one of 41 projects selected through a competitive review process.

The Northfield funding will help to replace a two-year after school grant from the Minnesota Department of Education that expired at the end of August and for which no additional state money was available. The Northfield News featured a story on this grant — and its impact on local youth — this summer.

Congratulations to the Northfield Public Schools and all the PRIMEtime partners for this grant, which will assure the continuation of important free out-of-school-time programs for young people in our community!

Because I Know You Listen To The Key’s Radio Show…..

KeYMN Graphic

Did you know The Key has a radio show?  If you did, good for you!  If you didn’t…..for shame!  Just kidding.

I just wanted to mention that The KeYMN Radio Show Podcast will no longer be available here, which is where it has been available for about a year now.  It will be available here instead, because the station we broadcast off of, KYMN Radio, has been kind enough to add our humble show to the entire station’s podcast.  The last episode to be featured on our independent podcast site will probably be the August 29th episode.

Youth Board President Makes Cotton Candy

This seemed to be a hot topic while it was going down, and someone said “take a picture of this,” and the only camera around was the very low quality one on my mobile phone.

The Key participated in Night to Unite on August 4th, in Bridge Square, where the kids painted faces and where Josh Wood made a bunch of cotton candy. He’s apparently really good at it, and doesn’t mind doing it as long as he’s told in advance that he has to.

Northfield Union of Youth
Going into a week of gratitude and thanks giving, we know that we have so much to be appreciative of. The community of Northfield has never stepped down from a challenge, and they have continually been willing to open both their minds and their hearts to the work around them that needs to be done to make this community a great place for EVERYONE. Never enough words exist to thank all those who give of their time, of their talents, and of their resources. THANK YOU so much to everyone who gave to the NUY during Give to the Max. We are so grateful to you all for believing in the power of youth voice and the creation of a caring community! ...

Northfield Union of Youth
“Hello, my name is Haley Heiner. I am the Co-President of the Northfield Union of Youth, also known as 'The Key.' I have been attending there for a while now and I’ve honestly never felt more at home there. So many wonderful people have accepted me there and I’ve gained amazing new friendships. The Key has helped me through so much regarding mental health, social skills, financial problems, and more. Without The Key, I don’t know where I would be today, and so many youth could say the same. The Key is the longest-running youth-led and youth-empowering organization recorded in the United States and I want it to stay that way. So many kids, including me, need a safe space like The Key. I'm so grateful that I have a place like this, and I am beyond grateful that our community cares for this organization.” Please consider donating for Give to the Max: give.mn/l8xqif ...
